If you’ve ever walked into a gym, you’ve probably seen a bunch of sweaty, red-faced people huffing and puffing away on elliptical machines, also known as cross-trainers. And if you’ve only ever used a treadmill or stationary bike, you might be wondering why cross-trainers have become so popular?
Cross-Trainers, What’s So Great About them anyway?
It’s understandable that an elliptical machine can be a bit intimidating if you have never used one before, but we encourage you to face the fear and give the cross-trainer a try.
This piece of equipment is very popular with our customers because the pushing and pulling motion means you can achieve a full-body workout at a pace that best suits you. That means it’s perfect for absolute beginners as well as seasoned athletes and everyone in between.
Our programmable cross-trainers have arm handles which provide resistance to work the muscles in your shoulders, chest, and back at the same time as the leg action of the machine strengthens the muscles in your lower body including your glutes, hip flexors, and quadriceps.
Regular sessions on the cross-trainer will also increase your lung capacity, reduce your resting pulse rate, and improve your endurance
These benefits can help decrease the chances of asthma attacks and assist in the prevention of chronic lung diseases.
It’s almost certain that the elliptical machine will feel awkward and strange at first, but we promise you will adapt to its movements very quickly. Although it looks complicated, using the machine is quite straightforward. You simply hold on with your hands and move your feet.

As a beginner, you might like to start with just the leg movements until you get used to the machine. When you are feeling more coordinated, you can add in the arm movements. Remember to maintain an upright posture and keep your core tight to maximise the results and get that full body workout.
And once you have mastered the elliptical, you can even switch direction and work backwards to workout different muscles. If you add some backwards motion into every cross-trainer session, you will also strengthen your calves and hamstrings. Bonus!
If you’re a more advanced athlete, you might like to add an elliptical session to your home exercise regime as a warmup before your main workout. Because the cross-trainer works out your whole body, this is a great way to warm up all of your joints and muscles and get the blood flowing before a big weights or cardio session.
