Finding Time for Exercise When You Have Young Kids

Finding Time for Exercise When You Have Young Kids

Being a parent is easy … said no-one ever! No matter how well prepared we are, when kids come along our lives change drastically. Suddenly we are responsible for mini humans who are completely dependent on us, and this doesn’t change even when they start to get older and more independent.

Life as a parent is hectic, with competing priorities and what feels like a never-ending list of appointments and deadlines.

It’s no wonder that exercise is often one of the first things we sacrifice when we have young kids. Finding the time to work out feels impossible, and even if we manage to find the time, we often don’t have the energy or motivation and would rather have a nap!

Regular exercise can have a significant positive impact on your mental health, it’s worth making the effort to adapt your lifestyle and keep up your fitness routine even after having kids

With a bit of planning, it is possible to find time to exercise when you have young kids. No, you probably won’t manage a leisurely 60-minute walk or jog around the neighbourhood followed by a latte at the local café several times a week. But you might be able to grab 10 minutes for yourself while the kids are napping or occupied with toys or other activities.

The good news is that it has been proven that short bursts of activity throughout the day are just as effective as one longer session, so fit in a 10-minute session on the treadmill, stationary bike, or rowing machine whenever you can.

Another way to find time is to combine exercise with playtime. Take the kids for a walk to the park, shoot some hoops at the local basketball court, race each other around the local bike track, play some backyard cricket, or walk laps around the playground while the kids are on the equipment. This approach has the added benefit of helping kids develop healthy exercise habits.

If you have a partner, block out time in the calendar for each of you to exercise while the other takes care of the kids. Or if you’re a single parent, find yourself an exercise buddy and trade off babysitting so you can both find time to work out.
