Calorie Deficit, what is it and how do I achieve it?

Calorie Deficit, what is it and how do I achieve it?

If you are exercising for weight loss, it’s useful to understand the concept of a calorie deficit. In technical terms, a calorie is a unit of energy equivalent to the heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1°C.

But more commonly, we use calories to measure the energy content and nutritional value of foods. Our bodies need calories to perform basic functions and allow us to engage in physical activity. When we are sick, our bodies need extra calories to fuel our immune systems.

There are three ways that your body burns calories each day:

1. Performing basic bodily functions such as breathing and blood circulation, which is known as resting energy expenditure.
2. Digesting, absorbing, and metabolising food, which is called the thermic effect of food.
3. Activity energy expenditure is what your body uses to fuel incidental and active movement, including sports and exercise as well as non-exercise related activities like housework, grocery shopping and even fidgeting.

What is a Calorie Deficit and How Do I Achieve It?

Together, these three categories make up your daily calorie expenditure.

If you consume fewer calories than your body needs to support your calorie expenditure, this is known as a calorie deficit. Maintaining a calorie deficit over a sustained period will generally result in weight loss.

But if you regularly consume more calories than your body needs to cover your calorie expenditure, it is called a calorie surplus, and you will likely gain weight.

The important thing to understand about this calorie equation is that you can achieve a calorie deficit by consuming less calories, or by increasing your activity energy expenditure.

Home exercise equipment is a convenient way to increase your calorie expenditure through regular exercise, without having to worry about fighting for equipment at the local gym, or having your exercise efforts disrupted by inconvenient weather patterns.

Of course, everybody is unique and there are other factors which may impact your calorie equation. It helps to understand the role nutrition plays in achieving your goals, and we also recommend reading our top exercise tips and tricks to set yourself up for weight loss success.
